More intuitive user interfaces, a web portal for managers and a mobile app for employees are among the big changes recently launched by the SmartPayroll team – and they have a new name and tagline: Smartly. The simple way to sort your payroll.

CEO Melissa Cheals says the new brand is “friendly, warm and modern” and is a good fit with the innovative, user-friendly functionality that customers can now access.

“We’re evolving. We want a brand that better reflects the business we’ve become. A business that is driven to help Kiwi SMEs look after their people.”

SmartPayroll was established in 2004 and – building on their longstanding relationship – Datacom took full ownership of the business in 2020. Smartly now works with over 20,000 businesses with varying payroll needs to help them navigate the challenges of New Zealand’s payroll landscape.

“Our relationship with Datacom presents powerful opportunities for their customers and ours – and for both of our businesses. A year ago, we met with people from all across Datacom and combined our expertise and knowledge to ask questions, ideate, design, test and figure out how to deliver on all the things our customers need and want, and we’ve created something great.”

New features in the employee app include labour costing, advanced leave management and time-sheeting functionality.

“With the simplified user interface and new product features, Smartly is giving companies the tools to empower their employees. Employees can apply for leave, see future leave balances, view their payslips and manage their timesheets, and their managers can easily track everything through their manager view in the app, or their web portal. It is all about making things simpler,” says Melissa.

“Payroll is a complex task, but an intuitive technology solution like Smartly makes it much simpler for Kiwi businesses to sort their payroll on time, accurately and in line with legislation. And very importantly, when we tested all the improvements with our customers, they loved it – that’s critical.”

The new changes allow Smartly to “go beyond payroll”, but Melissa says payroll will always be the heart of the business.

“Payroll is what we do, and we do it well. We want to be the leading payroll provider in the New Zealand market, and expanding our product platform and broadening our customer base will help us achieve that.”
