Access to leadership training and opportunities can make all the difference to an individual’s career path and the success of their team, which is why Datacom has leant its support – and its offices – to this year’s Indigenous Development and Employment Program (IDEP) workshops.
The workshops, which are run by JY Australia and Datacom’s partner the Indigenous Defence & Infrastructure Consortium (iDiC), are focused on leadership and team-building skills and cover a wide range of topics including effective communication, health and wellbeing and self-awareness.
JY Australia’s mission through IDEP is to close the Indigenous employment gap by growing the leadership skills of emerging leaders with training and mentoring opportunities, and ultimately accelerating their career pathways.
Datacom opened its office doors to host the workshops in Sydney and Canberra and Trainee Network Engineers from the team were able to join the sessions to gain inspiration from the First Nations emerging leaders and learn more about their leadership journeys.
iDiC Director George Mifsud said Datacom’s willingness to collaborate and invest resources in support of the IDEP speaks volumes about the organisation’s commitment to improving outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

Datacom’s support of IDEP and partnership with iDiC is part of the wider commitments it has made in its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) including focusing on “supporting fair and equitable access to the opportunities that technology has to offer – whether that is employment opportunities, business contracts and supply chain partnerships, or digital access to important services such as health, banking, or government support.”
Other activity to support this at Datacom to date includes building career pathways and opportunities specifically for First Nations people across Australia.
Datacom is a partner of the GO Foundation, which has around 1200 indigenous students on scholarship programs across SA, ACT and NSW and has hosted the GO team for workshops and training, including at Modbury campus with Datacom’s contact centre teams.
“Datacom is working is to provide career pathways for GO scholars into a diverse range of roles spanning both the contact centre and IT industries. We want to extend learning and development opportunities to more people and open the door to young people or career changers that might not otherwise see themselves working in the industry.”
