Data centres are the backbone of our digital world – and they’re also an electricity-hungry resource. Emerging technologies and increased use of generative AI tools will only see these power demands grow.

In this video series, Datacom’s Director of Data Centres Andrew Green looks at shifts in energy consumption and emissions, and how data centres can proactively manage infrastructure and energy sources for more sustainable outcomes. As of today, the global data centre industry uses around 1.5% of the global electricity supply, with projections suggesting that this could easily increase to 8% by 2030.

Building a sustainable future

Datacom’s Director of Data Centres, Andrew Green, explains how data centres use energy and produce emissions, the opportunity to manage total energy consumption across peak periods to reduce demand for non-renewable energy, and the factors driving the increase in energy usage by data centres.

Part 2:

Building a sustainable future

We look at Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) as a measure of data centre efficiency – and why it matters. This video also uses Datacom’s data centres as a case study looking at rigorous benchmarking efforts to improve energy efficiency, reduce the power usage of cooling, lighting and other supporting services on data centre sites with a goal of being 100% carbon neutral by 2030.
