Payroll is a critical area of business where AI can be used to reduce processing time, alleviate pressure and increase accuracy.

Richard Kenyon, Associate Director of AI in Datacom’s Datapay team, has shared some insights on where the opportunities exist for AI to reshape the payroll landscape.

“Our goal is to enhance accuracy and alleviate stress through AI and automation. By integrating AI into payroll systems, the aim is to address inefficiencies, automate routine tasks, identify exceptions, optimise workflows and improve communication.”

In the ebook “How AI will reshape the payroll landscape”, our payroll expert outlines some of the best use cases for AI in a payroll environment including identifying and prioritising exceptions instead of using resources to focus on routine checks.

Another valuable application of AI is in payroll communications, for example when complex legislative language needs to be simplified without losing its meaning.

Kenyon emphasises the point that trained professionals are still a critical part of the payroll communications process, but AI can speed things up and “transform the workflow from researching and writing to reviewing and validating, making payroll communication more efficient and effective”.

The ebook also explores three key areas of challenge and opportunity for AI in payroll including:

Predictability vs adaptability

AI integration in payroll must balance adaptability with the predictability of traditional systems. While AI optimises workflows and identifies exceptions, core payroll calculations need to remain reliable. The goal is to enhance efficiency without compromising accuracy.

Security and privacy

AI can improve payroll security by automating compliance checks and reducing human error. However, it must adhere to stringent security standards to protect sensitive employee data. Qualified professionals are still needed to review AI-generated content for accuracy.

Evolving skill sets and training

AI and automation will augment, not replace, payroll professionals. By automating routine tasks, AI allows practitioners to focus on strategic activities. This shift requires new skills and ongoing training to ensure effective use of AI in payroll processes.
