Lockyer Valley Regional Council (LVRC) is on a mission to lead, engage, and empower residents of, and visitors to, Lockyer Valley in Queensland, Australia.
LVRC is the region's largest employer, employing approximately 330 staff. As a team, they hold a vision to deliver sustainable services to enhance the liveability of their community while embracing economic, cultural, and natural diversity. They also want to achieve the best possible work/life balance for their employees and create a flexible, dynamic, and harmonious workplace.
As part of this vision, LVRC had earmarked 2020 as the ideal time to upgrade the region's wireless network. Under its remit, it manages the wi-fi networks for two public libraries and a visitor information centre, and it'd been experiencing challenges with its wireless network related to user experience (UX) when connecting to the network and having to manually administrate guest wi-fi. It was also concerned about risks to security and activity monitoring.
To achieve its goals, LVRC teamed up with Datacom to explore how they could build on LVRC's existing systems, including HP ProCurve and Aruba. An Aruba wireless solution turned out to be ideal for the compatibility and functionality it would provide within the existing infrastructure.
Thanks to the Aruba wireless solution, the two public libraries will be able to provide wi-fi access to library members and guests, with a user-friendly welcome page offering terms and conditions to access the wi-fi.
The visitor information centre needs to offer free public wi-fi to be accredited as a visitor information centre. The Aruba solution allows for secure management of the wi-fi network while also capturing visitor information, such as their home postcode.
“Datacom has a wealth of skills and experience that we find really valuable, particularly with the Aruba solution, so we’ve been really pleased with what they’ve put together so far,” said Graham Cray, LVRC manager of information communication technology.
And back at home base, the LVRC office's wireless network needed to support all employees using core business services like email and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, as well as agencies and contractors accessing its network. To ensure users and data were kept secure, Aruba ClearPass was implemented. The next step in this journey is for Datacom to bring the new solution to life.
“It wasn’t just supplying the hardware and walking away, as [Datacom has] worked with us through every stage of the project so far — particularly with bringing ClearPass online, which is such a crucial part of the solution. They’ve worked to ensure that each part of the solution delivers for our unique needs. I’ve been really grateful to have their experience and knowledge on hand,” Graham said.
