Datacom has opened a new office at 2/117 Heretaunga Street East, Hastings, which Mid Market GM Hayden Mckee says is a signal of the tech company’s commitment to the Hawke’s Bay region.
“A lot of people know Datacom as one of New Zealand’s largest tech companies and that’s true, but if you ask our customers, they will tell you we are locals. We believe in having strong, experienced regional teams so we can work face-to-face with our customers and really understand their businesses and give them the tools they need to thrive.”
The new office has been officially blessed by representatives from local iwi Ngāti Kahungunu.
Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst, who attended the office blessing, said Datacom’s investment in the office and its local team reflects the strength of the region and the many thriving organisations that are based there.
“It is great to see the country’s largest homegrown technology company making a commitment to our region and to our local companies. Having the right support and expertise on hand is an important advantage for any business and it is a real positive to see them establish their new base here in Hastings.”
Datacom MD Justin Gray says Datacom has a national team of more than 2800 and “many of those people are part of regional teams located in offices throughout New Zealand.”
“Our ability to work alongside our customers is something we really value, and we believe it makes a real difference to what we're able to achieve together."
Over the past two years Datacom’s local team has grown to 28 people and Mckee expects it to continue to grow over the next few years.
“Having a local team means we can be there when people need us,” says Mckee.
“Everyone knows that putting in a call to an IT helpdesk is not the same as having someone turn up.”
During the recent global CrowdStrike outage, Datacom ensured minimal disruption to business operations by visiting customer sites over the weekend to assess the impact and restore systems to an optimal and secure state.
“It was great to have someone on the pulse and looking after our systems,” says Manton Collings, CFO for Markham, one of Datacom’s Hawke’s Bay customers.
“We’ve definitely noticed security gains and we have peace of mind that things are running as they should be, rather than just assuming they’ll be OK.”
Other local projects in the last couple of years have included helping Te Whatu Ora to upgrade their server operating systems and managed service for Citrix support in Hawke’s Bay, and delivering a new payroll application for Napier Port, which has been very well received.
The Datacom team also stepped up in the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle to help Foodstuffs get back to serving customers by flying Starlink devices into Wairoa and Gisborne to keep their internet up and running, and to reestablish core network and communication services for the EIT campus in Hawke’s Bay. Datacom became a first-time sponsor of the Hawke’s Bay Business Awards last year, with the local wanting to ensure the community could celebrate their wins after a tough year.
Director of NZ Market Strategy Steve Swallow says one of Datacom’s greatest strengths is the breadth of expertise and experience of its team in working across industries and with customers across the country.
“Our Hawke’s Bay customers get the benefit of that breadth of experience and the fact we have skills spanning a vast number of areas from security to AI, apps to cloud, networking to running our own data centres. We’re proud to bring that capability and our consulting expertise to all our customers in the region and we’re looking forward to helping more businesses succeed.”
